My Road Trip to Texas Hill Country

When was your last roadtrip? If its been a while it may be time to consider a Texas hill country road trip. You can really have the best time in the lone star state. I think we often forget that the United States is filled with some of the best things to do. I spent the weekend in Fredericksburg, TX for a unique and memorable travel experience by staying at Blue Skies Retro Resort. Blue Skies Retro Resort is a one of a kind, step back in time experience. It’s very unique and charming. It’s a great place for guest who want to experience nostalgia of the 1950’s and 60’s. Guest can choose from vintage trailers each decorated with period furnishings and decor and equipped with modern amenities. I know what you’re thinking…a trailer? Really Jermany? I know ya’ll, I know. It is not typically like me to go for this sort of resort. Don’t get me wrong, I love my luxury 5 star hotels but I wanted to be open minded to a new adventure! And believe me, adventure it was.

The trailer is small, of course it is right? I mean…it’s a trailer? The space is very limited (cozy) but it has everything you need. The trailer has a microwave, fridge, tv, small sitting area, queen size bed and A/C. Now honestly when I first walked into the trailer I thought wow this is so small but cute. After running the A/C and trying out the bed I thought…wow this bed is comfy and this A/C blows harder than some apartments! Now, let’s discuss the bathroom situation. So, inside the trailer there is a half bath but in order to shower there is a separate private full bath specific to your trailer. The private bath is very spacious and it has a large outdoor shower area. The resort also has a fireplace and pool area. The only thing it was missing was a picnic table. The resort is private and somewhat secluded with lots of space to picnic and take in the scenic views and natural wonders of the Texas Hill Country Region. This place is definitely for nature lovers. Another thing that would’ve been great for this resort to have is a small social event. Something like “s’mores at the fireplace” could’ve been a great time! Even a simple little wine tasting would’ve been delightful. The fireplace is available for use but you have to light it yourself which was kind of a turnoff. In my opinion the little details add to the experience and can really make a place worth visiting. Also, with the resort being so private and located in what seems to be the middle of nowhere it definitely needed to have more lights. It gets really dark and the lighting was a bit slim at the property.

Overall, things I loved about this little place include:

Unique Charm

Comfy Bed

Great A/C

TV with streaming services

Large Shower (with hot water)

Helpful Staff

Location- 20 minutes from main street

If you love the retro style and appreciate the charm of the past then this resort is for you.

Next up, things to do in Fredericksburg. This tiny town has a lot to offer. It may end up being one of the best small towns that you’ve been to, especially if you’re a wine lover. This place is known for some great wineries. I was only able to visit two during my stay (this time). I went to Augusta Vin which has beautiful scenery. It felt like the perfect place to relax. They offer a standard tasting and a elevated tasting. The elevated tasting is recommended for first timers so that’s what I opted for. The elevated tasting is all red wine. The standard has white wines and red wines. Both tastings are very affordable $25-35 dollars. After Augusta Vin I headed to Heath Sparkling Wines. This wine tasting was $35. The Heath Sparkling wine tasting is in a group setting and each wine is paired with seasonal small bites. This property is also very lovely and worth a Texas hill country day trip if you’re in Austin.

For additional things to do head downtown. Downtown Fredericksburg has restaurants, shops and live music spots down main street. There’s also outdoor activities such as hiking and rock climbing at enchanted rock. You can also do water sports like kayaking and canoeing. Also, willow city loop has views of flower filled meadows and valleys. Who knew hill country towns had such charm? The scenic drive and rolling hills made for a very unique and memorable experience that I would like to experience again!
