They always say that Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. I always believed that as a child but as an adult things changed. As we get older the holidays can become so much more stressful. Unfortunately I’ve experienced loss during the holidays.
When you lose loved ones during the holiday season the holidays are never the same. It often feels like instead of enjoying them I’m just trying to get through them. This year as I push forward through “The most wonderful time of the year” I’ll be trying to include a few things to help get me through what can often be a very stressful and sad time for myself and so many others.
Things to help with stress:
Set small goals: Try not to add additional stress to yourself. You’ve accomplished a lot throughout the year. Continue to strive for your goals but make them obtainable. You have enough on your plate.
Give back: The holiday season is a great time to give back. When you’re able to bless others it can really make you feel purposeful. It’s such a inspiration and it can make you feel good about the holiday season.
Say No: If you start to feel completely overwhelmed just say no. Say no to that holiday party, going overboard with gift giving, and trying to make everything perfect. Prioritize what matters and what makes you feel good about the holiday season.
Things to help with depression:
Acknowledge: Grief never goes away. We just learn to deal with it. It’s completely normal to feel sad around the “happiest time” of the year. Cry and scream..express your feelings! You’re human, give yourself grace through this difficult time.
Seek support: It’s ok to ask for support during difficult times. You can turn to family and friends for extra support and love during the holiday season. The great thing about the holidays is that it’s a time for loved ones to be together. Cherish those moments and really make a effort to be around the ones you love to help raise your spirits.
